[Review] Rett Base Layer Pants by Kari Traa

Heading out on a ski trip can be a harsh time for your ski partner. Mostly because you’re wearing a limited number of base layers with minimal showering and little to no laundry. I have a few key base layer combos that I was sure I would wear throughout our 4+ week trip in the RV but to be honest, once I threw on the Rett Pants by Kari Traa, I didn’t wear any other base layer bottoms. Extreme comfort, the ability to adapt to conditions because of strategic design, and 100% merino wool are just a few things that I love about the Rett Pants.

I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to base layers and truly believe that merino wool is the best fiber to have next to your skin especially if you are out in cold temperatures. Not only is it extremely soft against my skin, it doesn’t itch and it has natural odor resisting properties. I can truly say that, magically, merino works really well to fight odors. I wore these bottoms multiple days in a row and not every time I wore these it was super cold so yes, I was sweating. Literally I couldn’t get these to start to smell. Maybe that’s why I kept wearing them over and over because there was no odor telling me I couldn’t.

I use my Rett pants mostly for skiing, both in the resort and in the backcountry but they would be excellent for a long list of outdoor activities. The nice thing about them is that because of the different weight and structure of merino panelling throughout, they adapt well to whatever conditions you are in.

I didn’t think I would be a fan of the inch or so thick waist band but it is actually ideal. It’s not uncomfortable and it is nice and tight (but not too tight) and keeps my pants up all day and helps to keep my top tucked in. It’s kind of cute too, if someone were to get a glimpse of it.

I’m still trying to figure out the sizing of Kari Traa gear. I’m 5’10, 150 pounds and I generally go for mediums in base layers. I like them tight up against my skin so that I don’t feel them moving around throughout the day. These pants fit me really well when I get all my layers on, however I don’t feel like they are the most flattering when I take my layers off. I kind of have big legs and so for any legging to be “flattering” they have to be real tight. Honestly, it’s not a big deal for me because I use them for skiing and will always have ski pants on over them but I did think it was worth mentioning. Of course, everyone’s body is different but I would highly suggest trying these on before you buy them.

Overall, I can say that these pants really held up to a lot of abuse (wearing almost everyday for about 4 weeks) and are the softest, most comfortable base layer bottoms I’ve ever had. As I transition over to spring and summer activities, I know these will be great to throw on under my moto gear on those chilly rides. I can’t deny also that Kari Traa only focuses on women and their gear is designed by women for women. I guess it sounds kind of selfish when it comes out but men really do get favored in the outdoor clothing industry.
