[Review] Women’s NTS Mid 250 Crew by Smartwool

I’ve always been envious of Tyson’s base layer quiver and would often get frustrated that I couldn’t find comfortable and warm base layers for women. Once I tried the NTS Mid 250 Crew by Smartwool, I knew I had found a favorite layer. With the intention of using it for skiing, I realized after a few weeks of wearing it that it will be the perfect spring and fall layer for hiking, biking, motorcycling, camping, and even just lounging around the house.

I personally prefer the crew style for skiing because it leaves less to get bunched around my neck while layering up. The fit of this crew is great and unlike some base layers I’ve tried in the past, the neck fits really well and isn’t overly tight.

I usually go for a size medium in base layers because I want them tight up against my skin. When they are loose, I get really annoyed throughout the day skiing and feel as though it’s just not quite as warm if my layers are loose. I’m 5’10 and weigh 150 pounds and I usually wear a size medium/large in tops. Even the sleeves are a perfect length and I feel like I have pretty long arms. The torso is plenty long that it doesn’t come untucked throughout the day whether I’m in the resort or the backcountry. Overall, I’m extremely impressed with the fit of the Mid 250 Crew and that helps to make it one of my favorites!

Smartwool designed this base layer knowing that us outdoor ladies would be throwing on a heavy pack at times. The shoulder panel seams don’t hit on the top of the shoulder so there’s no way for chaffing or rubbing from the pack straps hitting the seams. Along with strategic paneling, the flat lock stitching ensures comfortable seams throughout.

I have a hard time wearing base layers that aren’t merino wool, simply because I’m a firm believe that it’s the best material to have next to your skin. Not only is this top extremely soft and cozy next to your skin, it also has natural odor reducing properties. I can definitely say that I’ve put this to the test as we’ve been on the road for over 4 weeks. No matter how many days in a row I wear this and no matter how much I sweat, I can’t get this top to smell. It’s awesome for traveling and trekking!

The NTS Mid 250 Crew base layer top is one that will be my go-to for a long time. It’s the perfect weight keeping me warm, smelling good, and comfortable day in and day out. I also wear this top with Smartwool’s NTS Mid 250 Pants so be sure to check out that review.
