We made it to the end of the NMBDR, which for us - We made it to the end of the NMBDR, which for us - running north to south - was Dell City, TX. When we got to town we went to the only open restaurant and ordered a pizza for dinner, thinking we would take that time to use their wifi (we had no cell service), figure out a good route back home, and then find camping as we had to wait until the morning to get fuel.

After smashing a pizza and deciding to just head to the airport north of town to camp, we came outside to get back on the motos and the 790 would not start. I think we knew from the beginning it was a weird electrical issue - it was giving an MTC failure error and flashing red and orange lights. Everyone had left the restaurant, but we lucked out having the wifi. We tried several things, worked to figure out the issue and realized it would likely be a part that we would need to find from a dealer in the morning. We headed to the airport to sleep.

In the morning we tried to rule out some more issues and Tyson was pretty sure it was the crank position sensor. A relatively cheap and easy part to replace, however, no one had one in stock so likely would’ve waited 7-10 days for it to show up. And trust that we didn’t really want to be stuck in Dell City for that long, lol. So that’s where the budget rental truck came into play. We two-uped to El Paso, grabbed the truck, stopped back in Dell City to grab the 790 and then trucked it home. We got back to BV at 2 am, and then went to get Charlie the next day!

And while we are kind of bashing on Dell City a little bit, the people there were truly so incredibly wonderful, caring, and generous. The folks at the restaurant let us hang there, leave motos there, use their wifi, and even at one point offered to drive us to El Paso. It’s always the people that make the place, and if you have to be stuck somewhere, rural America is a usually a pretty dang good option. Cont’d in comment!

Day 6 - we meandered through the Sacramento Mounta Day 6 - we meandered through the Sacramento Mountains for most of the morning, got a lovely latte in Cloudcroft and then continued south to the Guadelupes. It’s pretty crazy how relatively close the Guadelupes are to the Sacramentos and yet, so wildly different. We kept waiting for an insane sweeping view from the rim road in the Guadelupes but all we found was extreme wind. We felt very remote the further south we got, and ngl - got a little barn sour towards the end. When we finally reached the end of our route, we had to laugh that Dell City was the goal. And while there are paved roads leading out of Dell City, a fluke 790 issue would keep us from using those roads with our motos. Stay tuned!!

Day 5: we thought we’d be dodging missiles as we Day 5: we thought we’d be dodging missiles as we circumnavigated the White Sands Missile Range but we ended up dodging a big ol bulls who liked the fence line road. From the desert to the mountains, this section was quite diverse! The start of the Sacramento Mountains did not disappoint and we added this area to our list of places to check out with dirt bikes! Oh and any day we get buzzed by fighter jets is a good day!!

Day 4: It was finally time to traverse east. We ca Day 4: It was finally time to traverse east. We came down out of the hills back into the open desert but not without some amazing wildlife. Turkeys, so many elk, deer, and an antelope that wanted to race. Grassy prairie littered with the tallest ponderosas you’ve ever seen. We dropped into T&C and were starving. Had the best Mexican ever at El Faro, took a dip in the mineral pool at Hoosier, and had a nice long shower! We camped in the desert just outside the missile range. Another incredible day exploring the backcountry of New Mexico.

Day 3: once again we were surprised around every c Day 3: once again we were surprised around every corner. Wide open desert, amazing pine forests, mountain roads fit for a movie scene. We rambled along the edge of the western border of the state, gave AZ a lil kiss on the cheek then started to head east. Incredible views, amazing roads, and a beautiful elk herd just down the road from where we camped for the night. Truly doesn’t get better than days like this.

Day two: it didn’t take us long to realize that Day two: it didn’t take us long to realize that we have been wrong about NM all this time! Completely mind blown by day two, we were in the desert one minute and the forest the next. Truly quintessential desert scenes and it was this day we quickly realized that the interstates do not do this state justice. Found a lovely little patch of dirt outside of Grants, NM to sleep.

Day one: we questioned all of our life decisions w Day one: we questioned all of our life decisions when we left Buena Vista during a cold spell but it quickly warmed up as we headed south. We started the BDR around 4:30 pm and kept trucking until we finally got cold enough to quit. Truly mind blown by the remote forests of northern NM. Highlight of the night: seeing a herd of wild horses.
