Dog Gear Reviews

[Review] The Climate Changer Jacket by Ruffwear

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’re probably aware that Hank isn’t much of a cold-weather dog. He could live on the beach in Mexico for the rest of his life and never question not returning to Colorado. Not only does he have thin and short hair, but he also has been diagnosed with alopecia. The vet deems it incurable and his hair falls out along his back, the top of his head, and his belly. It gets pretty thin everywhere else. With that said, having appropriate gear for Hank is key. He does still enjoy going for hikes when it’s cold and snowy but we like to make sure he is as comfortable as possible. The Climate Changer Jacket by Ruffwear is the perfect jacket for days that aren’t frigid, but he still needs a layer.

Made with recycled polyester fleece, you can imagine this is just like your favorite cozy fleece that you throw on. It’s soft but it’s also extremely warm without being bulky. The fleece is also quick drying which is key for a dog jacket.

The full zip makes putting this on Hank super easy and it fits really well. We had a Climate Changer jacket many years ago and it never really worked that well for Hank. Ruffwear states that this jacket has been redesigned for a better fit and this is absolutely true. The front chest area and front leg area is such an improvement and fits Hank really well. There are no complaints when it comes to sizing, we just measured Hank and used Ruffwear’s size guide. He’s 90-95 pounds, his girth is 35 inches (widest part of his rib cage), and he’s wearing a size large (sizes xxs-xl available).

The two reflective stripes down the jacket are a bonus, especially for early mornings or dark winter nights. There’s also a loop for a light for extra visibility. If you’re worried about this jacket covering your dog’s collar, don’t be. The Climate Changer sits naturally below the collar. Speaking of collars, Hank is wearing the Crag Collar by Ruffwear. We love it because it’s light, fits him well, and has a big reflective stripe around the entire collar.

Hank also has the Powder Hound Jacket by Ruffwear which is for colder weather. If you’re really out in the extremes, you can easily layer jackets making them ideal systems. The Powder Hound Jacket is perfect for the super cold and snowy hikes and includes a bit of insulation.

Ruffwear jackets are affordable (how much did you spend on that new puffy this year?), extremely well made, and fit well. Hank wouldn’t be able to venture out on chilly days if it weren’t for his Ruffwear Gear. He also doesn’t skip a beat when he’s wearing these jackets and he never complains about it. They must be so comfy and cozy. If you’re interested in purchasing the Climate Changer Jacket, doing so using our provided link supports us in that we get a small kickback from your Amazon purchase.
