[Review] The G22 Plus Crampons by Grivel

I’m not sure why it took me so long to upgrade my crampons but now that I have, I couldn’t be more psyched. The G22 Plus Crampons by Grivel are light (915 grams/pair), confidence-instilling on the ice, comfortable on the ground, and have anti-bott plates on both the front and rear so you don’t have any snow build up.

Speaking to snow build-up, my last crampons had nothing to help mitigate this situation and it was annoying. Even dry snow would ball up underfoot. I was constantly having to stop to try and get the snow out of the crampons. To not have that issue anymore thanks to Grivel’s anti-bott plates is very nice. The system works really well and even in wet snow, you won’t have an issue.

The double front points make me feel solid the entire way up the climb. They’re made with hot-forged steel so they’re durable and resilient. If you wear them down to a point where you can’t sharpen them, they are easy to replace with new ones.

The G22 Plus crampons are easily adjustable and fit a wide range of boot sizes. There are multiple adjustment points and the back adjustment you can make without any tools. Not that it is ideal for a day out climbing, but if for some reason Cally ever needed to wear my crampons, she could easily do so with a few quick adjustments. There are also two outer guides on the heal to ensure your heal stays in place throughout the day.

At Lake City, the access for setting up top rope on the main wall is just a steep snowy path up to the top of the wall. I never had any issues with traction going up or down. With the additional points located in the middle of the crampon, traction going down steep terrain was unmatched to any crampons I’ve ever tried. It’s amazing to be able to feel confident on the ice with the G22 Plus crampons but having the added bonus of feeling good in other terrain is equally as important.
