[Review] The Hemispheres II Backcountry Kit by Outdoor Research

My backcountry kit this year is the Hemispheres II by Outdoor Research and I’ve been really happy with it. There are a few unique features that make this kit stand out over other kits I’ve tried in recent years. First of all, there’s stretch gusseting throughout the Jacket and Bibs that ensure all-day comfort and don’t restrict any movement. Venting and airflow is key for a backcountry set up and kit has it dialed. I especially love how the sides of the jacket open up entirely for maximum airflow.

Both the bibs and jacket are built with Gore-Tex so you’re guaranteed to stay dry but it’s also breathable. This is an ideal setup for backcountry touring for that reason. You’ll stay dry if it’s snowing but will still have optimal moisture management while you’re working hard on the way up. The gussets throughout are also waterproof and breathable so there’s no chance you’ll get wet.

I like the fit of the jacket. I’m 5’10 and 160 pounds and I went with the large. It’s a slightly oversized fit but I can easily layer underneath it and I like the sleeve and torso length. With the bibs, I think I could’ve gotten away with a medium but went with a large because of different OR bibs I have. They were slightly tight in the thighs and I didn’t want that to be an issue with these. I think the medium would’ve been a better option, as I have a ton of extra space in the top portion of the bibs.

The one complaint I have about the bibs is that the adjustment buckles for the bibs fall right on my collarbones and when I have a pack on, they start to dig into my skin/bones. It gets uncomfortable on even shorter tours, so I can imagine on long tours or multi-day trips I’d be ready to cut the buckle off. I will mention that If I had the mediums, that buckle would likely fall lower down on my chest so maybe not quite as big of an issue.

I should also mention that there is no pow skirt but I don’t like pow skirts so for me this is a win. If you’re not wearing bibs by now, you should be and then you really don’t need a pow skirt.

Another key feature for bibs for a woman is if it’s easy enough to go to the bathroom. These have a side access zip that easily allows you to pull to the side and squat. It’s especially nice with the jackets side zip because you can unzip that, quickly and easily access the bibs zip, and go to the bathroom.

Outdoor Research leaves no stone unturned and this backcountry kit has everything that you need and nothing that you don’t. I have ample pocket options and appropriate venting options, and it’s comfortable for long tours or short tours. I can also easily layer under the kit if it’s cold out.
