[Review] Lam Base Layer Set by Kari Traa

Most of the Kari Traa gear I’ve tried has been from their warmer line for skiing. I recently received the Lam Baselayer Set by Kari Traa and while it’s a thinner base layer, it’s still made up of 100% wool. Merino Wool is an exceptional next-to-skin fiber no matter the season. Most recently, Tyson and I headed out with our dirt bikes for a PNW trip. We knew we’d have hot temps in the beginning but also knew they would quickly decline and it would get colder with every passing day (and it did!).

Merino wool is an amazing fiber for dirt biking for a couple of different reasons. First of all it is very soft and comfortable up against the skin. There are a lot of moving parts with dirt bike gear so it can be tough to have discomfort at the base layer. Merino wool is also naturally antimicrobial so these layers don’t start to stink after one wear. Traveling in the van, space is limited so it’s nice to be able to wear these base layers for days before they start to stink.

Merino wool is also insulating whether it’s wet or dry. Some rides you start out sweating but by the end of the ride, when the sun starts to set it gets really cold. These layers are also going to dry quicker than a polyester or cotton layer.

Even though the Lam Base Layers have flat-stitched seams throughout, I did notice some rubbing in a couple of areas. It wasn’t really an issue with the Lam, but more so with the fact that my knee pad was sitting on top of the seam and rubbing. It’s a hard thing to avoid when you’re wearing so much gear.

I never feel restricted in the Lam set and wouldn’t hesitate wearing these base layers for any activity. I’m psyched that these are layers that I’ll be wearing year-round, not just in the winter. The short sleeve Lam Top is key for moto riding and also amazing for working out, high country hikes, or walking around town.
