[Review] The North Machine Carbon Ice Axe by Grivel

The North Machine Carbon Ice Axe by Grivel is exactly what I need and want in an ice axe. Not only is the North Machine lightweight, it’s center of gravity is spot on and versatility unmatched. Whether you’re into alpinism or climbing at your local ice park, this axe will continue to impress you.

Aside from the carbon shaft keeping the weight of the North Machine down, it’s also warmer than metal and for me, feels less harsh on impact of swings into the ice. The carbon dampens the energy transfer, meaning less impact to my hand. If you find yourself using the axe in ways where you are holding the shaft, over time you will be happy to have the warmth of the carbon versus a metal shaft.

With the vario system you can opt for the North Machine Carbon with an adz, hammer, or simple (which is nothing). Aside from having options for versatility, you can also easily and quickly replace the hammer or adz. The vario system and the ease of use makes this a tool worth investing in in my opinion.

The ice blade has worked well for me and with the hot forging it should last a long time. If it gets to a point where I cannot sharpen the pick it is easily replaceable.

The hand grip on the North Machine is comfortable for all day use and also accepts a wide range of hand sizes. When Cally uses these, she has no trouble with grip or hand comfort and she has pretty small hands. I like to wear thinner gloves when I climb but even if you’re someone who wears bigger gloves, your hand will still fit the grip comfortably. I like the pinky rest on the bottom of the axe however the one just above the grip is too small to really be useful.

Pertaining to the axe shape in general, I found it to be the perfect design for more vertical climbs with less bulges to get over. It works well on vertical walls yet protects my hand from contact with the ice even with the less drastic curvature.

The center of gravity on the North Machine Carbon is, as you can see, much closer to the head than the center of the axe. Not only does this make for a more comfortable and balanced swing, it also helps mitigate fatigue after a long period of time.

Lastly, the carbide tip on the end of the axe is ideal if you’re using these axes hiking up steeps whether you’re on ice or rock. Not only will the carbide tip help you gain traction, it is also extremely durable and won’t wear down quickly.
