[Review] Best Mittens for COLD HANDS: The Point N Chute by Outdoor Research

If there is one thing I am qualified for, it’s testing mittens. My hands are always cold. It can be 34º and sunny and my hands are chilly. This year I was lucky enough to test out the Women’s Point N Chute Gore-Tex© Mitts by Outdoor Research which are an undercuff mitt made with the best materials to keep your hands warm. I’m continually impressed by how warm (and dry) these mittens are, especially for how slim they are.

To start with, it doesn’t matter how warm mittens are if your hands are getting wet. These are built with Gore-Tex© which is guaranteed to keep you dry. We have skied some heavy, wet snow and I have no issues with water ever getting in. For me, everything has to come together in a nice package that keeps my hands comfortable all day long. In addition to Gore-Tex, the Point N Chutes are built with EnduraLoft insulation. This insulation isn’t overly bulky and packs a big punch when it comes to warmth.

I was pretty hesitant to try a pair of mitts with finger liners, as I’ve always thought non-liner mitts were warmer. These proved that to be false and are the warmest mitts I’ve worn in a long time. In fact, my hands have gotten hot in these mitts which typically doesn’t happen. Something that is important to point out is that the liner material is a moisture-wicking material so if your hands start to sweat, they don’t stay wet. In fact, if my hands get warm in these I take them off in the lift line and let them cool for a bit and then throw the mitts back on before getting on the lift. That gives my hands time to dry/cool and the liner to dry. Every time I throw them back on I’m surprised when the mitts don’t feel wet.

I personally love the feel and look of all leather mitts and these are no exception. The Point N Chutes are built with goat leather and they are soft and supple right out of the package. They require no break-in! I think goat leather, being a little bit softer than cow leather, may not be quite as durable but for me, I’d take a little bit less durability to not feel the stiffness of cow leather.

It’s old news to have leashes on your gloves or mitts, but it has truly taken me this long to finally have some mitts that have leashes. I love this feature and I don’t think I’ll be able to go without them now. It’s so easy to not lose or drop a mitt off the lift!

Overall, if you’re looking for an undercuff mitt that will keep your hands dry, warm, and comfortable all day long, no matter the conditions you’re skiing or riding in, look no further than the Point N Chute Gore-Tex© Mitts by Outdoor Research. We’ve also tested some other gear by OR so be sure to check that out as well. Using our provided link to purchase supports us as we get a small kickback from your purchase.
