[Review] The Mont Blanca 1/4 Zip by Avalanche

To find an amazingly comfortable base layer that performs well no matter what activity you’re doing, for less than $40, is a pretty rare catch. Not only am I impressed by the price point of the Mont Blanca ¼ Zip base layer by Avalanche, I am also impressed by the how amazingly soft it is and the notable Polygiene antimicrobial technology.

The poly-spandex combo adds to the overall comfort and fit of the Mont Blanca. It’s nice and tight, yet it’s not restrictive which is definitely key for a base layer. The Mont Blanca top is also incredibly soft up against the skin and once you put it on, you’ll have a hard time taking it off.

I really didn’t think the Polygiene technology would make a noticeable difference in this top vs. other polyester tops I’ve worn but I have to say I was pretty impressed with it on our backcountry canoe trip. I literally wore this top every day and not only did I sweat in it, I got it wet in nasty water, sprayed tons of sunscreen and bug spray all over it, and generally just had it in a nasty environment consecutively for 5 days. By the end of the 5 days (for scientific purposes I’ll note that I was wearing deodorant every day) it really didn’t smell that bad. I know any other synthetic shirt I would’ve worn would’ve been a different story.

I would say that the Mont Blanca top definitely fits true to size. If you are looking for a super tight fit, I may recommend sizing down one size. For me, I like my base layers to fit tight up against my skin and so I went with my normal medium. The length is great so if you’re going to be using this top in the winter, you can easily tuck it in and it will stay tucked in all day. The sleeve length is nice and long as well and the collar fits tightly around my neck to prevent from drafts when in colder weather. The one thing I will mention about the fit is there is a seam that is just under the chest. For me, I have a slightly larger chest (D) and the seam kind of falls funny on my chest instead of under it. I think it would be much more flattering if it did indeed fall under the chest, which I think is what the intention was here. While it does not interfere with the function of the top at all, it is worth mentioning.

If you’re looking for an incredibly versatile, comfortable, odor-free top that won’t restrict your movement, look no further than the Mont Blanca ¼ Zip by Avalanche. This top won’t break the bank and will keep you feeling and looking great for your year-round activities. Also be sure to check out the Mont Blanca Legging which are equally as amazing and hard to take off once you put them on.

Overall

9.7/10

Pros

  • Super affordable
  • Very soft and comfortable
  • Fits really well
  • 1/4 zip isn't big and bulky so you won't feel it
  • Cute striped pattern

Cons

  • The seam under the chest seems a little funky for me (I have a larger chest) and sits in an awkward place. If you are small-chested, it will probably be fine.
