Outdoor Gear Reviews

[Review] The Mountain Explorer Kit by Adventure Medical Kits + Customizations!

Medical kits are integral pieces to any gear set that are often forgotten about, that is, until someone is injured on the trail. It’s a piece to the puzzle that we’ve worked to fit into almost everything we do. Whether it’s on the motos, skiing in the backcounty, or camping in remote areas for extended periods time, we try to always have some sort of medical kit with us. Fortunately, this winter when Cally broke her hand, we were skiing at the resort. Had we been in the backcountry, accessed by snowmobiles, it would’ve been a different story.

What we love about the Mountain Explorer Kit is that it’s a little bit smaller and more compact, perfect for groups from 1-4 people for up to 7 days, and is easy to add on to if you need or desire something specific. While this kit is comprehensive and well thought-out, we ordered a few extra supplies to add to our safety/supply drawer.

The Mountain Explorer Kit (as are most Adventure Medical Kit kits) is so well organized and easy for anyone to use. The pack that this kit comes in is equally as beneficial and imperative as some of the included supplies. Not only is the kit organized into different compartments that are labeled; there is a full list and diagram that points out where everything is. It makes finding what you need fast and easy and if you’ve ever been in a medical emergency situation, you know how important time is. We love how much effort AMK put into the organization of the kit alone.

A few things that we added to our kit from Tender Corporation includes an All Season Emergency Blanket by SOL, high quality fabric bandaids by Easy Care First Aid (package of 60), Ben’s Tick and Insect Repellant, After Bite® Outdoor, and Adventure Medical Kit’s Trauma Pak.

The All Season Emergency Blanket is ideal for many uses and is a good idea to carry with you in your vehicle, on backcountry skiing trips (use as a sled to get someone out of BC), camping trips (use as a tarp etc.), and many more adventures. We love that the material is extremely durable, safety orange on one side and reflective on the other, and even has secured brass grommets on each corner. The options for use are endless with this durable safety blanket and not to mention that if you ever need to use it for its main intended purpose, it will keep you warm while being visible.

We knew heading up to the Boundary Waters in NE Minnesota would call for insect repellant that actually works and with Ben’s Tick and Insect Repellant, you’re getting a high quality, water-based bug spray with 30% Deet. Even some of the most relentless mosquitos of Northern Minnesota didn’t bother us.

If you’re like Cally and could use all of the bug spray in the world but still get eaten alive, After Bite® Outdoor is something you should keep with your camping gear, in your car, and in your house. After Bite® is seriously a miracle worker and relieves pain and itching from bites and stings instantly. No more itching to the point of bleeding. We’ve found that unlike comparable itch reducing creams, After Bite® only has to be applied once and typically rids the itching for at least 12 hours.

Lastly, we added on Adventure Medical Kit’s Trauma Pak mostly as something to keep with the motorcycles at all times. Motorcycling can be pretty mysterious when it comes to wrecking and with machinery and speed, the outcome of a wreck will usually include blood. The Trauma Pak is a no-bullshit kit that contains what you need to control bleeding until medical professionals arrive. Bleeding is one of the most dangerous scenarios and can require fast action. With everything you need in this bag, it’s a quick thing to reach for if you should ever need it. It’s good to keep it separate from other kits and know where it is at all times.

Below is a list of supplies included in the “quick to deploy” Trauma Pak:

  • 1 – Bandage, Conforming Gauze, 3″
  • 1 – Dressing, Gauze, Sterile, 2″ x 2″, Pkg./2
  • 1 – Dressing, Gauze, Sterile, 4″ x 4″, Pkg./2
  • 1 – Gloves, Nitrile (Pair), Hand Wipe
  • 1 – 25 g Advanced Clotting Sponge
  • 1 – Trauma Pad, 5″ x 9″
  • 1 – Duct Tape, 2″ x 26″
  • 1 – Bandage, Triangular
  • 4 – Antiseptic Wipe
  • 1 – Trauma and Accident Management Instructions

Not only do we love having a medical kit for shorter adventures, it’s awesome being able to add onto the kit and make sure we have what we need. At Tender Corporation, you can find anything and everything you need to be prepared for any scenario.
