[Review] The Runyon Sport Pack by Sierra Designs

The Runyon Sport Pack by Sierra Designs is my new go-to pack for any day adventure. The simplicity of the Runyon, complete with a roll top closure, has made me grab this over any other pack as of late. I think the roll top has a time and a place but I think for this pack, it’s absolutely perfect. While the Runyon Pack has a capacity of 20L, the roll top makes this pack effortlessly versatile.

I truly think the roll-top is where this pack shines and maybe I’m obsessing over it because I’ve never owned a roll top pack before but it’s sweet when it comes to packing. It’s very easy to over pack this pack as the roll top allows for a bit of an expanse. The roll top is also key if you need a pack but you’re only taking a few items, you can easy cinch the top down and slim the pack down entirely. Combined with a snap closure and a magnetic buckle to keep the roll top in place, getting into your daypack has never been quicker.

I love that even though the Runyon Pack is extremely simple, Sierra Designs still provided you with some options when it comes to pockets. I love the huge zippered pocket on the front of the pack and it’s perfect for a GoPro and wallet or any other valuables you may want to stash on your adventure. If you are traveling with this pack it should be noted that this would be an easy target pocket for pickpockets however for adventures outside, it’s perfect.

You also are provided with two huge sleeves on the front of the pack, which is where I typically keep my water bottle and a dog leash. Easy access, large, and versatile – the definition of these pockets for sure!

In case you’re not one to use a water bottle, you also have the option to bring along a water reservoir. There is a separated sleeve that’s compatible with most water hydration systems you may have laying around the house. There is even a Velcro strap to keep your reservoir in place. I will note that if you add a full reservoir to the sleeve, it bulges against your back a little bit. For me, this doesn’t make or break this pack as I usually use a water bottle.

The Runyon Sport Pack is noticeably light when you pull it out of the box and would be a great addition to any travel kit (especially if you have to pack the day pack). The straps are definitely comfortable enough for me for a day adventure. There’s also a sternum strap which helps keep the pack in place. Keep in mind there’s no waist belt so if you plan on doing an activity like mountain biking with the Runyon, it may shift around on you a bit.

Overall, I never realized I could love a daypack so much. The versatility really speaks for itself and the fact that you can over pack or under pack the Runyon while still fitting what you need is a great bonus. Even the other day, I went out to shoot some photos and I was able to fit a slim tripod in the pack and roll the roll top down around it. I hardly even noticed I was carrying a pack! If you’re looking for a simple, sleek and adaptable day pack that is light enough to pack on your travels, look no further than the Runyon Sport Pack by Sierra Designs.

Overall

9.9/10

Pros

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Comfortable yet simple
  • Roll top is so versatile and makes packing a breeze
  • Magnetic buckles are so nice
  • Huge zipper pocket on the front for all of your valuables

Cons

  • The back sleeve will bulge a little bit when you put in a full water reservoir - not making it extremely uncomfortable but definitely noticeable. Not really a con for me b/c more often I'll use a water bottle instead.
