[Review] The Trackdown MIPS Helmet by Bollé

I have been wearing the same helmet for mountain biking for about 15 years and not only has the comfort of helmets progressed, the safety technology has also advanced very much in that time. When I first put on the Trackdown MIPS Helmet by Bollé I wondered why I waited so long to upgrade. If you’re looking for a lightweight mountain biking helmet with MIPS technology, I would highly recommend the Trackdown and here’s why.

First and foremost (and the reason we wear helmets in the first place) is the safety that comes with the Bollé construction and integrated MIPS. MIPS stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System and is built to reduce rotational impacts to the brain. It mimics the protection system in our head and can reduce brain injuries or the severity of brain injuries.  The MIPS system works to redirect the energy transferred to or from the head during a rotational impact again reducing the amount of potential force that could result in a brain injury. I have the MIPS system in my ski helmet and now in my cycling helmet and while injuries can still happen, I feel more protected with the MIPS system on board. While MIPS adds to the price point a bit, I would say hands down that it is worth it.

A helmet, no matter what kind of technology is included, is not going to do a good job of protecting your head if it doesn’t fit properly. Not only is this lightweight helmet offered in 3 sizes, the Click-to-Fit system ensures a perfect fit every single time you put it on. This is the best way to get a helmet to fit you perfectly every time and it is a feature that will make or break my decision to purchase a helmet.

More factors that add to the comfort of the Trackdown are the included vents and inner air channels. Even if I’m not going fast, I feel like there is ample airflow and my head is staying cool. If you ride in cooler weather, the Trackdown also includes a winter liner to keep you warm. For hotter temperatures, this helmet goes above and beyond at keeping me cool no matter what speed I’m traveling.

The visor is a 3-way visor so as never to get in your way no matter what type of riding you’re doing. If you don’t like any of the 3 positions, simply remove the visor altogether in a matter of seconds. There is also a sunglasses garage, which is key for me. More often than not, Cally and I get caught out in the dark on our rides. Now I don’t have to worry about stuffing my glasses in my pack when it goes from dusk to dark and I know they’ll stay in place and out of my way.

Not only does this helmet exceed necessary protection standards, it fits extremely well thanks to the Click-to-Fit™ system, keeps me nice and cool, and looks pretty cool on too. Be sure to check out all of the helmets that Bollé offers with MIPS (would highly recommend any helmet you buy for any sport include this technology).
