[Review] The Rose Base Layers by Kari Traa

The warmest merino wool base layers that Kari Traa offers – the Rose Long Sleeve and Rose Pants – are sure to keep you warm on the coldest of days. The Rose layers are made with 100% Merino wool which is one of my favorite fibers for next to skin layers.

Aside from the Rose Layers fitting really well, they also are very comfortable no matter what you’re doing. I’m 5’10 and 155 pounds and the size medium is the perfect size for me. I like my base layers to be tight up against my skin and the mediums are just that. There’s plenty of length in the top which is nice because it stays tucked in all day (even if I’m falling). I have really grown to like the button closure that Kari Traa is doing on this layer as well as others. I’m a crew neck kind of person and the buttons add some extra temp regulation. If you’re in the backcountry on the skin track, it is really nice to unzip your jacket and unbutton a few buttons to get some airflow.

Made with super-fine Merino wool, the Rose carries a lot of natural benefits thanks to the fiber that is Merino wool. First of all, Merino is one of the softest wools in my opinion and is not itchy at all. Merino is naturally odor-resistant which is amazing because on ski trips, I’ll wear these layers four or five days before washing them. They don’t start to stink, even if I’m getting sweaty during the day. These layers are also breathable so if you’re on the skin track in the backcountry or hiking to your favorite chute in bounds, the Rose layers are going to help you regulate your temp and reduce overheating!

Like many Kari Traa layers, the seams are all flat-lock stitched which reduces chafing or discomfort. This is especially important if you’re wearing a pack. The overall comfort of the Rose layers is pretty incredible and they are some of my favorite layers to date. I’ve mentioned it before but I just wish that the Rose pants had a wide waistband rather than the standard Kari Traa 1-inch wide elastic band.

The Rose Layers rate as the warmest base layers in the Merino Wool family of the Kari Traa layers. They’re the perfect base layers if you’re like me and you run cold. Not only are Kari Traa layers built for functionality, comfort, and performance, they are also stylish and look good on. With the option of several designs and colors, you’re sure to find a design that works with your vibe. If you’re looking for a layer that’s a little lighter, check out the Lus Baselayers. They’re made with a Merino blend fiber which is still really comfortable and soft up against the skin.
