[Review] The Quinzee Jacket by Ruffwear

If you’ve been with us a while, you know that we have a hound dog Hank who is overall pretty lazy but likes to get out on at least a daily walk no matter the season. Here in Colorado, the winters can be cold and windy and Hank has very short hair and suffers from alopecia resulting in patchy hair loss. He’s tried a number of Ruffwear jackets in the past, but we were having issues because they were rubbing his hair in places and it was causing more hair loss. This had nothing to do with Ruffwear in fact, his older jackets fit him so well we were bummed it was happening. Insert the Quinzee made by Ruffwear and it’s a looser style that has been the perfect compromise of keeping him warm without rubbing his hair. He certainly loses some warmth because of the more vest-like style of the Quinzee but it was a compromise we had to make.

The Quinzee is insulated with a high loft recycled polyester insulation. This jacket feels ultra insulating and has kept Hank warm even on wintery windy days. The shell fabric is coated with a DWR (durable water repellency) which is awesome to have. DWR doesn’t mean that your dog will stay bone dry when you go out in the rain or wet snow but in light showers, the water will run off.

Hank doesn’t wear a harness (hair probs) but if your dog does, there’s a convenient leash portal on the back of the Quinzee which is compatible with most harnesses. Another great benefit is that this jacket packs into its own integrated stuff sack so if you have a travelin’ hound, this jacket packs down easily.

We go right off of Ruffwear’s size chart and the size is always spot on. Hank is wearing a size large Quinzee and it fits nicely (he’s 90 pounds). The stretch gusset on the chest allows this looser-fitting jacket to fit well and stay in place. The Quinzee also has reflective trim and a light loop attachment if you’re out after dark on those short winter days.

Without Ruffwear, Hank would be too cold for his favorite winter walks. Thankfully for the Quinzee, we’ve been able to keep him warm while minimizing his hair loss problem. Be sure to check out some of the other Ruffwear gear Hank has tried.
