[Review] The Edge II Electric Skateboard by iKON

If we’re being totally honest, we’ve never really been “skateboarders.” But when iKON reached out to us about trying their new Edge II Electric Skateboard, we were intrigued. When we move for work for 5 months out of the year, we head to the midwest and leave all of our fun (and fast) toys behind in Colorado. For fun, we take hank on walks in town. It’s not exciting at all and if you know Tyson, you know that he’s not having fun unless he’s wearing a helmet, risking injury, going extremely fast or all of these things combined. We thought that having the Edge II would be a great compromise of not having any of our fun toys with us, and still having something that would be enjoyable down the runway after a long day or flying or in town on the 20+ miles of nicely, well-kept path systems.

First of all, the Edge II is way more fun than we ever could have imagined. We didn’t think it would go this way, but literally just carving turns up and down the runway is very enjoyable. It’s similar to the feeling of wakeboarding or waterskiing, pow skiing or snowboarding, or kiteboarding. It’s that butter smooth, carving turns feel. We knew right away when we tried out the Edge II that we should’ve gotten one a long time ago. We feel as though it takes a bit less coordination than skateboarding without a motor, as you can stand and balance on it pretty easily without having to remove your foot to push yourself. Keep in mind that while we are both pretty athletic, we haven’t logged a lot of time on a skateboard. It was a lot easier to pick up than we thought.

Out of the box, once charged up, you’re ready to rip on the Edge II. It’s super intuitive, easy to use and you don’t really need to read the directions though it is advised and you should throw a helmet on as well. Theoretically speaking, you could get very injured falling from a skateboard that is going 25 mph so just remember safety first. Anyways, we like how we could literally jump on it and go and it was very easy to figure out. There is no learning curve in the actual operation of the skateboard.

The functionality is obviously the most important topic at hand, but the Edge II sure is nice to look at! The deck is a bamboo core with carbon fiber composite reinforcement and the carbon look is extra sleek. In my opinion it and gives you the perfect amount of flex. The carbon also adds to the strength of this board overall and ensures longevity. With the perfect amount of flex, the Edge II is comfortable on long or short rides. Another unique pop of the Edge II are the gold-plated trucks. It’s a small detail but really ties the look of the board together.

A huge surprise to us was how smooth and tight you can turn with the Edge II. This is thanks in part to the independent motors. The independent motors are also beneficial in that smooth start and stop that I talk about in the video. I never would’ve guessed this action to be so smooth, I would’ve assumed that it would be easy to be thrown forward or back when using the brake or throttle. Honestly, we’re really blown away by the feel of this electric skateboard and had no idea that we could get the same sensation from it as skiing in pow, water skiing, or kiteboarding. It has truly added a bit of fun to our work season and it’s something that we can do when it’s windy, foggy, rainy, or when we’re waiting for work to come in.

Speaking of rain, the Edge II is IP57 Certified. Everything is fully sealed so while you wouldn’t want to ride this into a pool, riding in the rain or through puddles is not going to impact the skateboard. I think it would be pretty annoying to have to worry about getting your skateboard wet and so luckily with the Edge II, you have the peace of mind that it can romp through any condition and not be damaged.

Overall, we’re pretty excited about adding the Edge II to our lineup of fun things to do, especially during the work season when we really don’t have too much excitement. Now we just need another one and we need to work on training Hank to run along with us and we can head out on family outings. If IKON ever comes out with a more “off-road” orientated electric skateboard, we hope to be the first ones to try it out! Be sure to head over to iKON to check out all the details of the Edge II and to purchase your own. If you have any questions, be sure to leave them below.

Edge II

Overall

9.9/10

Pros

  • Way more fun than we ever would've thought
  • IP57 certified so you don't have to worry if you're riding in a rainstorm
  • Clean, sleek look
  • You can cruise up to 29 MPH and go a distance of 18 miles (under optimal variables)
  • Fun and simple way to get around

Cons

  • We thought that the battery gave no warning after it was low it would just power down very shortly after. This isn't a con, but it's important to know that as time goes on the battery indicator on the remote will begin to understand the battery capacity better and give a more accurate representation of the battery in the board.
