[Review] The Eisfeld Guide Pant by Mammut

Whether you need a pant for ice climbing, alpinism, or skiing, the Mammut Eisfeld Guide Pant is versatile, comfortable, and reinforced in areas where you need it most. The combination of soft-shell stretch with Gore-Tex waterproofing lends to ultimate all-day comfort while staying protected from the elements. The fit of the Eisfeld Guide is ideal for climbing and the durable cuff reinforcement offers protection from my crampons.

As far as sizing goes, I am 5’10 and 155 pounds. I usually wear a size 6/8 in pants but sized up to the size 10 in these pants. The 8’s were too tight on my thighs and waist and not long enough. I’m happy with the overall fit of these pants, though I wish they were just a little slimmer from the knee down. I absolutely love the high waist in the back of the pant (and it’s breathable mesh). To get a perfect fit every time, there are adjustable velcro tabs on each hip that are easy to access.

The inner gaiters are adjustable with velcro and snaps to allow for adjustment depending on what activity you’re embarking on. As well as an adjustable gaiter, the cuff of the pants is also very adjustable with an expandable zipper and a velcro tab. Whether you’re cinching these pants down around your mountaineering boots or your backcountry ski boots, you can get the perfect fit.

All of the pockets are accessible with a climbing harness on and there are no back pockets which I love. For me, back pockets just get in the way and add to discomfort so avoiding them altogether is key. In addition to pockets, there are two vents on each thigh. The vents are mesh-lined. I do find that sometimes the zippers on the vents work down throughout the day of climbing. I’m not sure if it’s because of how my harness sits on them or just the redundant leg movement. It’s not a huge deal but could get annoying on a really cold day.

The Eisfeld Guide pants are built with Dyneema® durable material to protect your pants from crampons and or ski edges. It is a burly material yet doesn’t feel bulky and withstands the abuse. Honestly, I’m questionably clumsy in my crampons and have already ripped my pants multiple times above the knee but that would happen in any pant. I just need a pant that has crampon protection all the way up to mid-thigh.

Overall, I’m really happy with the Eisfeld Guide Pants for ice climbing. They provide ultimate freedom while climbing and you won’t feel restricted no matter your movement. They’re stretchy and breathable but still waterproof in areas to protect you from getting wet. They also come with suspenders but I prefer to wear them without. Luckily the suspenders are easy to take off and on and are also low profile so they won’t interfere with a backpack.
