[Review] The Gilliam Jacket by Carhartt

If I had to pick a favorite mid-layer or light jacket, the Gilliam Jacket by Carhartt would be it hands down. Not only is the Gilliam warm, but it’s also extremely tough and only $100. With 100 grams of poly insulation, a Cordura shell, and Rain Defender DWR coating, the Gilliam is ready for anything. If it’s really cold out, I easily layer it under a jacket, shell, or Moto jacket.

The biggest talking point, in my opinion, is the fact that this jacket only cost $100. It’s superb quality, has ample pockets, and attention to detail where you need it most. It’s not like Carhartt skipped out on some features to get the Gilliam to this price point. They just did it all and made it affordable.

I have plenty of nice and warm down jackets that are comparable to the Gilliam but they are all $300 plus. And the shells just don’t hold up. I end up never wearing them because I’m afraid that I’m going to rip them. I have literally tried to beat this jacket up but every time Cally washes it it just comes out looking as good as new. I have not been nice to this jacket over the last three months but there’s nothing to show for that. I’m floored that there’s not even a tear yet and evidently, that means the Cordura shell works.

As far as sizing goes, I’m 6’0 tall and 190 pounds, and I have on the size medium. I think the medium is an ideal fit except for the sleeve length. It’s just a tad short. I think I’m going to get a size large and compare the sizing. If you’re in between sizes I would recommend sizing up just for that reason unless you don’t care if your sleeves are a touch too short.

Literally the only thing I would change about the Gilliam is that I would put zippers on the front hand pockets, instead of snaps. I just don’t like putting anything in pockets that don’t close securely with a zip but that’s a pretty minor request for such an amazing jacket.

If you need an insulating layer for those cold winter days that you can continue wearing year-round like on chilly summer nights, the Gilliam is for you. You won’t wear any other jackets and you’ll try hard to destroy this jacket but it just takes the abuse without showing it.
