[Review] Smyth Gore-Tex 2L Pant by Dakine

The Smyth Gore-Tex 2L Pants are going to keep me dry for seasons to come. Paired perfectly with my Mercer Jacket, not only do I receive a lot of compliments, I am dry and warm no matter what conditions I am skiing in. While I love the length, design, and reinforcement areas of the pants, I found the waist to be tighter than other larges I’ve tried in the past.

I’m 6’0 tall and usually a size 34/32 and when I first threw on the Smyth Pants, they felt pretty tight in the waist. The length was perfect. I wear long underwear and padded shorts and so I knew that maybe that had something to do with it, but I’d never run into that in the past. I’m used to the fit now and I feel like if I went up to an XL, they would be too oversized and baggy.

The Gore-Tex membrane is guaranteed to keep you dry and I can definitely attest to this withholding it’s promise. Skiing in southern British Columbia lately, it seems as though we are skiing pow at the top and through the rain at the bottom of the mountain. While the snow is pretty good, it is crazy to get drenched at the bottom of the hill. I have stayed absolutely dry underneath. No matter what conditions you find yourself riding through/in, the Smyth pants will keep you dry.

I’m a huge fan of the reinforcement on the inner cuffs of the pants and the bottom hem all the way around as well. These reinforcements will keep your pants looking good for seasons to come. No matter what, I generally end up accidentally cutting the inside cuffs of my pants with my ski edges. I have some that are totally shredded and, even with the reinforcement on these, I still have managed to cut them a little bit. It’s not a big deal but if the reinforcement material was just a little bit thicker, it may have been avoided.

One gripe I have with these pants is the pockets. They are kind of hard to get in and out of and are a little cumbersome to zip closed.   I think it is because of the angle that they sit at. I rarely use my hand pockets so it’s not a big deal for me but it is just something I thought was worth mentioning.

Overall, I have been so pleased with both my Smyth Pants and Mercer Jacket by Dakine. I haven’t worn much else since I’ve gotten this combo and it’s because they perform amazingly well and look good too. Gore-Tex, great fit, and reinforcement where you need it will keep you feeling good while you’re out farming pow.
