[Review] Men’s Merino 150 Base Layer Long Sleeve by Smartwool

If there’s one thing I love more than the perfect base layer, it’s the fact that I can wear the base layer year round. The Men’s Merino 150 Base Layer Long Sleeve by Smartwool is the perfect 4-season long sleeve base layer for a multitude of reasons. For me, the 150 weight is perfect because I can layer over it in the winter and wear it as a stand-alone top in the warmer months. Between the comfortable fit, added durability and merino construction, the Merino 150 Base Layer is my newest go-to for anything outside.

Thanks to Core Spun technology, Smartwool has the added benefit of a bit more durable of a fiber. With Core Spun, the fibers essentially have a nylon core and are then wrapped with Merino. With nylon at the core, there is added durability and integrity. With Merino as the shell, the fibers are super soft and comfortable up against your skin and Merino is still doing its job of cutting odors and wicking away moisture.

Smartwool is continuing to think about the user as they work to design base layers and it shows. The raglan style is perfect to keep your skin from getting irritated or uncomfortable throughout the day especially if you’re wearing a backpack. The seams are also flatlock constructed which cuts down tremendously on chaffing or general discomfort.

The fit is consistent with other Smartwool pieces that I own. I’m 6’0 tall and 200 pounds and the large fits me really well. I love the sleeve length and find that the sleeve does not bunch or recede. I do like the length of the top because I feel like if it were any longer it would kind of impede on the overall look of it and make it look a little more base layer-y if being worn in casual situations. However, I feel as though if it were just a half of an inch longer, it would be ideal. I usually wear bibs but I could see it being an issue for someone wearing pants and or someone with a little bit longer of a torso.

Overall, if you’re looking for the ideal base layer situation, I would highly suggest the Men’s Merino 150 Base Layer Long Sleeve by Smartwool. Not only can it be used year round, but it’s also perfect for travel and won’t start to stink after one wear. It’s ultra soft up against the skin, an incredibly comfortable fit, and won’t irritate you no matter the adventure you’re embarking on.
